You and your mate are in charge of assembling two all-star teams. It is a good old-fashioned draft just like in the school playground; a bunch of players waiting to be picked for a game of 11 on 11. Yet, these are no ordinary players. For this exercise, all the squad members of Chelsea and Manchester City are standing right in front of you. You are given the first overall pick. Who do you take? The draft starts now and you are on the clock… Multiple thoughts run through your head at once. You think about how your starting XI could be built. Goalkeeper? No. That can wait. Defender? Vincent Kompany, John Terry, Gary Cahill….all suitable defenders but not yet. Midfield? Okay, now its getting interesting. Cesc Fabregas? Yes, you say, lets go with Cesc. Hold on! What about the steel and tactical intelligence of Nemanja Matic? Hes been brilliant this season. Oh, look Yaya Toure is standing over there; forgot about him. May need a word with him to see how he is feeling. He doesnt look like he is too interested in talking, though. Eden Hazard? Has been better this season, is progressing well, but what about in big games? Did well against Arsenal but disappeared at the World Cup. Perhaps, Im being a bit harsh. A better playmaker? David Silva. The ultimate space invader -- never has a bad game. Time is running out. Tick. Tick. Tick. Strikers? Oh yes, should take one first - the hardest thing in the game to do is to score and cant let the other team have two good ones. Diego Costa? Okay, thats a no-brainer. He has nine goals already in seven Premier League starts. Scores different kinds of goals, holds the ball up well, exceptional link-up play, and finds space. But what of Sergio Aguero? Scorer of four goals against Tottenham on Saturday, now also with nine goals in the Premier League through eight games. Finally healthy, he has all of the qualities you can ask for in a complete centre-forward. Magnificent movement, strong, exceptional close control with the ball at his feet, quick and a rocket of a shot to cap it all off. Aguero vs Costa. In a battle to become the next Premier League champions, their teams, the two supreme genuine heavyweights in a division of light-punching cruiserweights, at best, may well have to win that individual battle if they want to become the last men standing come May. Much has been written about Jose Mourinhos evolution at Stamford Bridge this summer and it is clear the additions of Fabregas and Costa, coupled with a full season of Matic, have made them far more dangerous than last campaign. There is no reliable sabermetric statistic in this sport that shows ones value over another like in Major League Baseball, for example, but you dont have to be into analytics to understand that Chelsea are much stronger this season and will absolutely finish it with more than the 82 points they ended with in 2013-14. Reigning champions Manchester City didnt go through the same overhaul as Chelsea. After all, they felt less inclined to make changes after winning the title with 86 points. However, the continued rise of Mourinhos men suggest City need to be better than last season if they want to regain the Premier League title for the first time. Simply put, 86 points wont get it done and this years team needs to find a way to be better than the one that scored 102 goals last season. Its a formidable task set by the deep pockets of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. So how do City improve from last season? One obvious area is in goal. Last season, City would have had more points if it wasnt for the individual errors that plagued Joe Hart, particularly the one at Chelsea in the final minute which handed Chelsea two more points and took away one from themselves. A three point swing that would have meant they beat Chelsea by seven points last season and not four. This season, Hart seems a little must self-assured and so far hasnt cost his team points. City, however, are far from their best at the moment. The form of Toure has rightfully been questioned but the overall balance of the midfield has yet to be found with manager Manuel Pellegrini trying a number of different combinations so far. Slow starts are not unusual from champion teams. The transfer window and two international windows being open through the first two and a half months of the season can lead to disjointed performances. It happened to City last season; gaining just 16 points through the first eight matches (two points per game) before going to raise that average to a far more impressive 2.33 PPG for the final 30 matches. This season they are on 17 points through the first eight games having already played Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham -- four of the top six from last season. Last year they had only played one of the previous seasons top six through eight games (a vastly underperforming Manchester United), despite only reaching 16 points. It is clear, then, that City are on a path of improvement and the main reason for that has been Aguero, who against Tottenham on Saturday showed that he has the ability to swing the momentum their way in matches. A crucial trait in a winning team is to have the ability to dig deep when the opposition is having their moment in the match and when a difference maker like Aguero is fit he can do that with goals out of nothing, much like he did with goals number one and four against Spurs. When he is fit, City are a different side and he also gives them tactical versatility because he is equally dangerous in a front two or leading the line by himself. This season he now has nine Premier League goals in 527 PL minutes. That is a goal every 58.5 minutes. He has played the best part of 110 hours of Premier League football in his career and now has 61 goals. That gives him a goal every 108 minutes at that level, the best in the 22-year history of the Premier League. Yet we still want more. The goal scoring numbers are incredibly impressive but one number that is concerning when it comes to Aguero is the amount of games started. In his first season at the Etihad, he started 31 games and scored 23 goals. In 2012-13 he started just 22, scoring 12, and last season he started 20, scoring 17. Starting 42 games in the last two seasons combined is not enough and some of those matches came when he was far from healthy. Whenever the Argentine is seen grimacing on the field, City fans rightfully get very concerned. Just think how much better Argentina would have been at the World Cup had he been himself. Man City may have some consistency issues with Toure and their midfield at the moment but they do have their real talisman back. If they can keep their 26-year-old star striker on the field to start more than 30 league games this season then that will be the biggest contributor to their improvement. A healthy Aguero can be the difference City need to stop the Chelsea juggernaut. He is a player the Premier League is lucky to have, their best of all when truly himself. Many players raced back out for a celebratory dip in Arizonas Chase Field swimming pool. From last place to an NL West title in less than three months, they sure let loose. Burdened by high expectations and a horrible start, the Dodgers relieved their pent-up pressure with a joyful celebration after becoming the first team this year to clinch a playoff spot. Hanley Ramirez homered twice as they rallied to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-6 on Thursday. "I want to keep going," Ramirez said. "I think that weve got a couple of more steps to do. Weve got to keep working and stay together all the way through to the end." Ramirez was back in the lineup after being sidelined five of six games with an irritated nerve in his lower back. Hes played 1,090 regular-season games but will be making his first trip to the post-season. Only three active players have played more games without making the playoffs. Despite an NL-high payroll of $214 million-plus on opening day, the Dodgers got off to an 30-42 start and were last in the division, 9 1/2 games behind the first-place Diamondbacks, before play on June 22. Los Angeles has gone 58-23 since, including an unreal 42-8 run that coincided mostly with dynamic Cuban defector Yasiel Puigs callup to the major leagues. "Im a guy that doesnt show a lot of emotion," manager Don Mattingly said. "I really try to keep it kind of even. But this is a great accomplishment for these guys. We put a great team together and a big payroll with huge expectations. A lot of time that falls apart and it had a chance to fall apart during the season, I thought. "But the coaching staff stuck together. These guys were loyal to me. There was no backbiting or somebody trying to leap over me. They stuck together. ... The players came together, we got healthy, and then we just rolled." The Dodgers trailed 6-3 in the sixth and A.J. Ellis hit a tiebreaking homer off Josh Collmenter (4-4) leading off the eighth. J.P. Howell (2-1) got two outs for the victory. Kenley Jansen struck two in the ninth for his 26th save. Clinching on the home field of their nearest, but not very near, rival, the Dodgers charged the mound after Aaron Hill flew out to left field for the final out. They mobbed Jansen and the throng bounced out toward second base in continued celebration. A few Diamondbacks watched from the dugout. Most made their way to the clubhouse. "That was pretty awesome, man," Jansen said. "It showed that we never quit. We kept playing hard. Even today, they scored six runs, we never quit. Thats pretty awesome." Ramirez, hit a three-run homer in the third inning and a tying solo shot in the seventh. It was his 14th career multihomer game and first since Aug. 18 of last year. It was fitting he was the star of the clinching win. "Were a veteran ballclub," Adrian& Gonzalez said.dddddddddddd "We understand its not how you start, its how you finish." In the ninth, with a sizeable contingent of Dodger fans roaring its approval, Jansen fanned Paul Goldschmidt and Martin Prado before Hills fly all ended it. Arizona manager Kirk Gibson, whose team won the division two years ago, appreciated what the Dodgers had accomplished, even if it was difficult to watch them celebrate on the Diamondbacks turf. "You just take it in and reflect on some things," Gibson said. "We still have to play hard the rest of the way out. It is disappointing. We fought hard and the guys played good today. We were unable to secure the lead." With a new ownership taking over from Frank McCourt on May 1 last year, the Dodgers stumbled this spring and Mattinglys job appeared to be in jeopardy. But Los Angeles won 17 of 20 leading into the All-Star break and was 22 games above .500 after a three-game sweep of the Mets on Aug. 17. Lately, the banged-up team had struggled, losing nine of 12 and five of six entering Thursdays games. Los Angeles started strong in this one, though. Arizona starter Wade Mileys troubles in the third began when he walked Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco to lead off the inning. Puig was forced out at second on a throw from right fielder Gerardo Parra after the base runner held up on Jerry Hairston Jr.s blooper. That brought up Ramirez and he homered to left to make it 3-0. Nolasco couldnt hold it. Arizona started the third with four consecutive hits, including an RBI double from Paul Goldschmidt and two-run triple by Prado to tie it at 3. Miguel Montero singled Prado home with the go-ahead run. After Parras two-out single, Mileys double to deep left-centre brought the runners in to make it 6-3. Los Angeles came back. Consecutive doubles by Juan Uribe and Scott Van Slyke, followed by Ellis RBI single cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth, then Ramirez led off the seventh with his 20th home run of the season, on an 0-2 pitch from Chaz Roe, and it was tied 6-all. Collmenter came on to get Arizona out of trouble in the seventh, but Ellis, the No. 9 hitter in the Dodgers batting order, sent the first pitch of the eighth just over the fence in left and Los Angeles led 7-6. Miley went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Nolasco went five innings, giving up six runs on nine hits.
